Breaking the Stigma: Raising Awareness for Mental Health

Updated: Feb 4

In today's fast-paced world, the topic of mental health requires more focused attention and advocacy. One area that continues to face stigma and silence is mental health, and in particular among young males. In Montreal, a noteworthy initiative called "Step into Light" is taking a stand to break barriers and shed light on the importance of destigmatising mental health by supporting youth in need.

By taking a "Step into Light" on Everest, Matthew Turner, a montreal student at Lower Canada College is raising awareness on the current needs of youth by raising funds for the Tide Project at the Douglas Hospital, a project helping access to the right kind of treatment early. Prompt, effective treatment at this stage can be critical to help people feel empowered in the short term and in fulfilling succesful futures.

"I have witnessed how depression and substance abuse can destroy not only the person affected, but the friends and families that love them. Mental health is an illness like any other, and it warrants compassion, care and the best possible treatments out there. By taking a stand, or rather, by taking the first step like I will on Everest this March, I feel I can help youth find their way one step at a time."

Mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background.

It is essential to recognize the signs, and that asking for help is a signal of strength and courage, rather than weakness. All too often, societal norms and expectations discourage young males from expressing their emotions or seeking support for their mental well-being.

"Step into Light" is an initiative that aims to challenge these stereotypes by providing a path for youth to open up about their struggles with mental health. By raising awareness and funds for mental health support, this hike up Everest to Base Camp seeks to empower youths in Montreal to prioritize their mental well-being and seek help when needed by simply believing in taking the first step.

This website serves as a platform to share resources, stories, and information about mental health. It serves as a valuable resource for corporate sponsors, foundations, friends, and family members who want to support this cause and make a difference in the lives of youth struggling with mental health issues. By focusing on destigmatizing mental health and promoting open discussions, "Step into Light" is not just a campaign but a movement towards creating a more inclusive and supportive community for all youths in Montreal. Together, we can break the silence, raise awareness, and support those in need of mental health assistance.

Let's step into the light together and embrace a future where mental health is prioritized, supported, and respected. Together, we can make a difference and provide hope for a brighter tomorrow.
